Caroline Gussman Keller did not work as an illustrator, and, when her eyesight deteriorated, she did very little painting. However, she instilled within her three children, deep appreciation of the work of Howard Pyle.

Her son Deane Keller, who is a painter and taught at Yale, remembered receiving books illustrated by Pyle, for Christmas and listening to his mother's story of her study with Pyle. When he presented talk at the Delaware Art Museum in 1942, he nostalgically recalled "There was a sort of magic in the name of Bertha Day and other fellow students of my mother's under this semi-mythical hero [Howard Pyle] of mine."
