James Bell Graff, from Riverton, New Jersey, studied with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute in 1899 and exhibited his work in the School of Illustration's May exhibition held that year. His illustration Benjamin Franklin, done as a class assignment, was selected for publication, in the Saturday Evening Post. Also, Graff painted several black and white oils for Paul Leicester Ford's "Jannice Meredith" ,which was serialized in Callier's, in 1899 and then publishedin book form.  Other students who illustrated Janice Meredith as a class project were Anna Whelan Betts, Bertha Corson Day, Emlen McConnell, and Ellen Bernard Thompson.
