Born in Vermont, Philip Hoyt studied with Howard Pyle at Drexel in 1898 and 1899 and in Chadds Ford in 1899. Pyle invited him to study in Wilmington, where he worked from 1900 until at least 1903. According to Frank Schoonover’s notes, Hoyt later became a successful contractor.
