In the class notes compiled by Ethel Pennewill Brown and Olive Rush, Pyle’s comments on Mater’s work are quoted:

” (On Elevated Train at Sunset) This is good.  You have comprehended the stillness of the hour, in this quiet landscape and then have swung this meteor-like monster across the sky.  One feels the rush and thunder of the train — the curve of the track also carries out the idea.  Only that little green light at the end of the train attracts the eye and is a little jarring.”

“On Oil Study of Rocks)  This is too much like the regular exhibition picture.  I feel that I have seen many similar pictures exhibited.  It is well-arranged and the color is pleasing, but it does not express anything.”
