He was a prolific writer and illustrator of children’s books; one of his best known works was The New Adventures ofAUce, a continuation of the original Lewis Carroll story. The adult books Rae illustrated include Flight into Oblivion, by Alfred J. Hanna, and The Winds of God, by Irving Bacheller.  Rae illustrated books published by Harper’s, Mamillan, Dodd Mead, F.A. Stokes and P.F. Volland.

Rae was a member of the Society of Illustrators. the American Federation of Artists and the Artists Guild, Inc.  He painted portraits of such well known personalities as Albert Einstein, Carl Sandburg, opera singer Freda Hempel, and composer Harold V. Milligan. Rae’s work is represented at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. Rae lived for many years in Caldwell, New Jersey, but moved to North Stonington, Connecticut, during his latter years.
